Introducing UX to the data and analytics team

The goal

Increase the amount of customer engagement and impact the data team could have.

Introduce UX processes into the product development process within the data team.

My role

As the first UX designer in the data team, I was in charge of embedding UX processes into a team that previously only contained engineers. This involved:

  • Embedding design into the delivery process by setting up rituals such as a weekly design-engineering discovery meetings, amending delivery ticket templates to incorporate design requirements and getting design included in all sprint rituals
  • Designing new UI components and page templates specific to data and reporting for the design system. Collaborated with engineers to ensure templates were modular and reusable.
  • Collecting feedback on existing reports through user interviews, surveys and analysis of customer support tickets to identify the highest priority issues to address
  • Ran ideation workshops with internal stakeholders and customers to discovery new high impact features that could be developed
  • Spent 4 months doubling up as product manager, as existing product manager was on extended personal leave

Outcome

  • Generated positive social media publicity for Ailo by designing a new KPI dashboard which helped property management customers drive their rental arrears down to zero
  • Increased the perceived trustworthiness of existing reports by introducing a more professional UI
  • Sped up the delivery time and decreased support requests by standardising the layout of reports across the platform and making sure they all followed best practices
  • Oversaw the elimination of dozens of the most common and time consuming support requests by advocating for improvements to features based on survey and research feedback
  • Improved squad productivity by leading workshops to define and iterate on processes with engineers and product manager
